Wednesday I was home with both kids because D was sick and I was home so Emma was too! Emma took a shower that morning. First of all, for being 2 1/2 she sings VERY loudly in the shower. It is quite entertaining! Here is how the conversation went:
E: Mommy I all done.
Me: Okay Em, come on out.
Me: Oh Em, the bath mat is all wet. It's really wet. Let's put it in the dryer for mommy.
Em: I do it, I do it!
Em (running down the hall with the hooded towel draped from her head, otherwise naked, and holding the wet bathmat): "I Superman to the resuce! I Superman! Superman to the rescue!"
I LOVE her little personality! She had me laughing out loud!

I'm not one for coming up with my "own" recipes. I love to cook, but usually follow a recipe. With it being Friday last night, and being good rule abiding Catholics, I was trying to come up with a non-meat dish that everyone else wouldn't put their noses up at. We had already had the oh-so-nutritious deep fried fish on Wednesday (Ash Wednesday--double whammy with no meat twice in one week!), so I was trying to avoid "fishy" dishes again! Here's what I came up with:
I mixed grated cheddar and monteray jack cheese, chopped up onion, and chopped mild green chiles. Spread the mixture inside tortillas. Roll up, place seam side down in a baking dish, pour one can of store bought enchilada sauce on top, sprinkle with more grated cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. My kids liked them as did the hubby! Very yummy!

It is a beautiful gorgeous day. It is amazing how a little fresh air and some time outside can make a sore throat, stuffy nose, and crabby kids all feel a little better! I was hesitant to let the kiddos out, because Em has D's fever now. She really wanted out though, and so did I!!! The fresh air was great for all of us! Much better than sitting on the couch watching movie after movie! (Been there done that already with sick kid #1 this week).
And that my friends, is what life is like for a Real Housewife in the O.C.!!! I clean my own house, cook my own meals, and still have sweats on at 12:45 PM on a Saturday. Oh yeah---and my kids are eating mac and cheese and dino nuggets! Not too glamorous--but we love it!

Thankful moments...
Things I am thankful for today...
A BFF that would literally do anything for me without thinking twice. She picks my kid up from preschool, takes them home, loves them, feeds them all while my oldest had a 102 fever and could be infecting her whole household! Then the next day picked up my daughter so my husband wouldn't have to go the preschool while he was home with our sick son. Doesn't even think twice. She just does. She is the most amazing friend I could have ever asked for. I am so blessed that God has sent us down this path of life together--to cry, to laugh, to pull our hair out, to raise our children together, for our husbands to be great friends, and for her to be "Auntie Julie" (until recently she was still "auntie hulie" ) to my children. A second mom to my kids. Wow. It's amazing when God gives you that kind of gift.
A wonderful neighbor and friend that notices when my car is home on a day it shouldn't to call and check. She then listens to me vent my frustrations about sick son on day number 2 1/2 not eating and gently reminds me of the things I can't control. She's right. She's patient. She's calm. She is a friend!
A friend from high school who continues to amaze me with her wisdom. We have known each other for 22...can that be right Mere? 22 years? She and I both moved to Hockinson, Washington the same year. Life has taken us both down different paths, but she continues to be one of the very few people from high school that I keep in touch with. She is insightful, wise, and mature way beyond her years. She is inspiring. And most importantly, through her blog, she makes me feel NORMAL! Yes--normal!
Thankful for a day off...even if it is because Dylan still has a fever. Thankful to be in sweats all day, watching movie, after movie with the kiddos. Thankful for a husband that came back in the bedroom this morning to see if I just wanted one more hug. Thankful that he is able to stay home tomorrow until I get home to let Dylan have another day of rest.
Thankful for a few hours to blog, read blogs, and relax while both children nap!
Thankful for the stillness and quietness that allows me to be thankful!
Thankful to have so many reasons to be thankful!
May you find many reasons to be thankful today too!

The Guilt!
I am wondering tonight how many other moms out there find themselves feeling "guilty"...no matter what choice they make. My dear husband stayed home from work today to take care of our oldest, who has a fever of 102. As I am leaving with my 2 year old to drop her at preschool, he is crying that he just wants mommy. The guilt for not staying home....indescribable. I know he is home with daddy, but I should be cuddling him today. Then, we get to preschool only to find out that my daughter's sheet was dirty from a potty accident the day before, and I forgot to check on this. So, when we got there the sheet was put nicely in a plastic bag waiting to go home and be washed. Sure they had spares for her to sleep on, but the guilt knowing my daughter would not be able to nap on her own sheet...horrible. I called for a substitute teacher today to work in my room tomorrow. Dylan is still not feeling well and I told Ryan I would stay home tomorrow. I am also scheduled to be out of the classroom on Friday for a math workshop all day. The guilt for not being with my classroom children for two days in the same week...stomach turning.
Seriously, does it end. My mom has told me before that guilt is self-inflicted. I totally believe she is right. I know I wouldn't be human if I didn't feel a little guilty. But come on? Is all of this guilt necessary?
My sweet boy sat on the bed tonight telling daddy something as he was drying Emma off from the bath. After he was done, Dylan announced, " I am done talking now." Made me laugh out loud. Emma wants to know everyday if you remember her favorite song, "Twinkle, twinkle song." She loves for you to count to three, sing it to her and rub her back before bed. So precious. The guilt is all self inflicted. My children love me and know I am doing the very best I can for them. My students, they know that I am a mommy too and that is why I care about them so much too! They understand that I need to be mommy 100% tomorrow. Even the students' parents emailed me wishing that Dylan would feel better soon.
Guilt is completely self inflicted. I need to give myself more credit that I am doing the best I can. I am always wishing for two more hours in the day, or a way to clone myself. God gave us 24 hours in a day for a reason. Make the most of those hours. Work, play, rest, enjoy. And don't feel guilty!

Not Me Monday!
Ever since I read Mere's "Not Me Monday" postings...I have been waiting to do mine! I checked out MckMama's too and loved the idea! To think I can confess all of these things to fellow mother's and release all my guilt...bring it on! So here it goes...
Nope. Not me. I would NEVER come home from work on Friday, put on sweats, sleep in said sweats, and still be in them on Saturday at noon. Never. That would be disgusting, especially since I rolled out bread dough and had flour all over my sweatshirt the night before.
I would definitely not raise a daughter that would randomly bite another child at daycare. Children like that do not come from my home. Who bites? My daughter definitely did not get up during flannel board stories, walk around the "friendship circle" (ha--what a joke) and pick her victim to chomp on. My children never act like that. Nope.
I would never eat raw cookie dough from the fridge, in the fridge, to hide from my children. That would be a very bad example. I would never then proceed to drink right from the milk carton. Not me. I would never spend hours trying to set up a blog, read my good friends blog, or talking about how inspired I am to start a blog, instead of cleaning the house and grading papers. That would be so "unmommy like." Definitely not me.
I never pretend not to hear my children in the middle of the night just so my husband has to get up to tend to them. I never not look at my husband and sleepless child as they enter the room to use the bathroom in the middle of the night just so I don't have to get up. I never not say a word just to avoid being "found out" that I am really awake but just to lazy to get up. Nope. Not me.
I never fold all the laundry and then just leave the socks in the basket. I never pretend that I just ran out of time to fold them because folding socks definitely does not put me over the edge! I surely can handle matching socks. How hard can it be? I definitely don't feel like pulling my hair out just looking at a basket of socks.
My dear husband offered to stay home a few extra hours this morning so my overtired son could catch a few extra hours of sleep. I got my daughter loaded up in the car for preschool to realize the bikes were still loaded in my car from the bike park the prior day. I surely did not snap at him for not unloading the bikes after he was staying home for our son. Honestly, that would be so rude of me!
Okay...I feel guilt free...until tomorrow!!!

Welcome!
Welcome to my blog! I was inspired to start this after reading (for many hours) my good friend Meredith's blog. She had me laughing, crying, and feeling inspired to write down my experiences. Thanks Mere!
I do want to start off by saying that I am not a "housewife." I would love to be one, however I do work as a teacher full time. When I was choosing my blog title, I decided if the women on the show, "The Real Housewives of Orange County" could have jobs and call themselves a housewife, so could I! I often feel like I am pulling "double duty" in my life and that my life might, just might, be a tad more "realistic" than the women on TV. But, I am just guessing.
I am excited to take this new venture and hope that many of our friends and family from far away can follow our lives and watch my children grow up through this process as well! Please join us on our journey!
~Liz
